![]() His writing is just significantly below anything Double Fine or Telltale is putting out, as much as some fans deny it. Ron Gilbert has been talking about wanting to do another Monkey Island, which would ignore Curse, Escape and Tales, but I honestly don't want that to happen. You can also sense this in the later games Schafer and Grossman made, such as Day of the Tentacle, or the solo Schafer-games such as Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, Psychonauts and BrĂ¼tal Legend, which are much closer to the quality of the early Monkey Islands than anything Ron Gilbert made after that. The comedy of Monkey Island comes from Grossman (who also worked on Tales) and Schafer (who didn't work on any of the Monkey games after 2). And he also designed the Scumm engine, which is great - he's a great technical designer but not much of a writer. The first two Monkey games were almost entirely written by Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman, with Gilbert providing a general story outline and puzzle designs. ![]() ![]() ![]() It's weird to me how he always gets the credit for everything good about those games, while his later games, where he did the writing himself, aren't exactly written that well (see Deathspank). The first two games weren't witty because of Gilbert.
